Blue Cabin Summer Residency
Other Sights is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the first summer residency for this year at the Blue Cabin. We are grateful to be welcoming back Skeins: Weaving on the Foreshore weavers Chepximiya Siyam’ Chief Dr. Janice George and Skwetsimeltxw Willard (Buddy) Joseph,
They will be in residence at the cabin from July 3rd to 23rd, and will host a public talk on July 22, 6pm, focusing on the history of Salish Weaving and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh history. The event is free, and seating is limited, please reserve your spot here.
Chepximiya Siyam’ Chief Dr. Janice George is from a prominent Squamish family with an ancestral connection to the history of Sen̓áḵw. She has numerous ceremonial and cultural responsibilities within her community. She graduated from Capilano University and the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is a hereditary chief, a trained museum curator and educator, and co-curator of Woven in Wook: Resilience in Coast Salish Weaving, University of Washington, Seattle. Chief Dr. Janice George received the Squamish Nation Excellence Award for CULTURE and the national Dreamcatcher Award in 2010, for her outstanding contributions to the community in arts and culture. She has interviewed, recorded, and learned from the Squamish Nation Elders, her most honoured teachings, and co-organized the first Canada Northwest Coast Weavers Gathering. Chief Dr. Janice George received an Honorary Doctorate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2025.
Skwetsimeltxw Willard (Buddy) Joseph is an esteemed Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Elder and master weaver. He is the co-founder of the L’hen Awtxw Weaving House. Buddy is the former director of the Squamish Housing and Capital Projects and currently consults on capital projects for First Nations communities. He is the co-author of the book, Salish Blankets: Robes of Protection and Transformation, Symbols of Wealth. Together with Chief Dr. Janice George, Skwetsimeltxw Willard (Buddy) Joseph teaches at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, this fall they are teaching a special interest course on Coast Salish Weaving.
