Blue Cabin Events with Angela George

Join artist-in-residence Angela George in the Blue Cabin as she creates a monumental panel-weaving, “Weaving Governance.” This is a chance to learn more about this incredible project and George’s creative practice, and help weave or bring small projects to weave in the Blue Cabin. George’s “Weaving Governance” will reflect a foundational governance model for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation that demonstrates evidence of ancient knowledge and connection to the lands, waters and ancestors that continues to guide and empower sustainability in modern times.

With the resurgence of weaving among the Coast Salish peoples, there is a growing desire to connect to and understand the value of the intricate weaving patterns and methods their ancestors used. Weaving was an essential practice throughout Coast Salish peoples that reflected the weaver, the respective family origins, and who and what the weaving was designed for. There have been significant losses suffered through the disruption of oral traditions and generational record keeping due to residential schools and colonization. These losses include weavings, languages, history and customs related to traditional weavings. As a weaver, Angela George has come to understand the significance of weaving revitalization, along with language and cultural revival. The Tsleil-Waututh people have never given up their aboriginal rights and title, nor their ancient jurisdiction to protect the lands, waters and traditional territory in and around səlilwət (the place called Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm). Tsleil-Waututh ways of knowing and ways of doing are key factors in an overall revitalization of self-governing customs. The weaving design George is drafting is a compilation of the essential traditional laws, values and vital references for the modern Tsleil-Waututh Nation to consider when moving forward with a governance and constitution process and systems and restructuring exercises.
