the future is floating – 2020 Future museum
This last public event for The Future is Floating created a fictional harbour tour of the future, looking back at the year 2020. With stops along the way, including Cockatoo Island, the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and Barangaroo. The artists created a narrative that parodied the ‘tour guide’ presentation of place, introducing more complex stories of diaspora, extinction, national identity and the historical record. Audiences were gifted with tea leaves, green mango and homemade fish sauce to celebrate both the conclusion of the residency and the lunar new year.
Museum of the Future featured collaborative works by James Nguyen (Settler lives and works Naarm), Holly Schmidt (Canadian settler from Musqueam, Skwxwu7mesh and Tsleil Waututh Territories), Keg de Souza (Settler lives and works on Gadigal land).
This event featured a Welcome to Country by Venessa Possum, a boat tour of the Museum of the Future 2020, visitors were also invited to visit the Museum of Extinct Species in the upper cabin. The event closed with an announcement of the People’s Choice Award for the DNA Reclamation Project.
