The Larwill Park Site Inaugural Project
OTHER SIGHTS COLLECTIVE
The Inaugural Project directly acknowledged the site’s past by mounting a series of large “cutout” images taken from documentary photographs that referenced its history as a space for public gatherings and expressions of public emotion, while placing a spectacular emphasis on the site’s potential for the contemporary imagination. The photographic images were printed in distinct Pantone colours; each colour echoed in the painted surfaces of the back and supporting structures, effectively creating a series of freestanding monochromatic artworks. In form, each object mimicked a billboard structure, an invitation to consider yet another new possibility for the site.
The sculptures were placed strategically to address different experiences of the site. Pedestrian walkways, traffic patterns, and views to the condominiums surrounding the existing parking lot were acknowledged in their placement. The individual images were chosen to suggest a past utterance of joy, rage, hope or pride, referring to the broader historical context of public engagement on the Larwill Park site.
